This film came about when my friend and frequent collaborator Kevin Keating – the star of Highway 58 – approached me with a script he had written. I was eager to take on a script for a story that I hadn’t conceived myself, so I was enthusiastic to give the script a read. I thought the script was solid with some really interesting characters dealing with some deeply rooted emotions and decided to take it on.
I was in the midst of watching and re-watching Richard Linklater’s “Before Trilogy” – Before Sunrise, Before Sunset, Before Midnight – and the script for Highway echoed a lot of what I found brilliant in those films. I loved the unspoken moments between characters, the subtle gestures that hinted at a world of emotions, and the audience being a fly on the wall for it all by adapting a very restrained and simple shooting style; minimal cuts, long takes, one camera position. Through the marriage of Kevin bringing me his script and my love of the “Before Trilogy,” Highway 58 was born; and with that, the most mature film I’ve done to this point in my career. Highway went on to win several awards. including ‘Best Ensemble Cast’ and the ‘People’s Choice Award’ as the audience favorite film at the Golden Egg Film Festival.
Give it a watch, let me know what you think of it, and I hope you enjoy it!
This is Jovanni, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off.
