Kenny Omega is, without a doubt, one of the top 5 wrestlers in the world right now. He was number 4 on the Nerd/Out Top 100 list we put together earlier this year. He’s put on amazing performance after amazing performance. It hit another level when AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, and Doc Gallows left NJPW. That created a vacuum of main event talent in that promotion.
Omega stepped up big time. After putting in even more great work, he just killed it at the G1 Climax. Someone who grew up with him took to the Squared Circle subreddit to share their thoughts on seeing his performance at that tournament.
From Redditor RyanTcone:
I grew up in Transcona, played hockey with Tyson [Kenny Omega’s name IRL] for years, we went to high school together and I was a part of the small pocket of friends who thought it was awesome that he was aspiring to become a wrestler when everyone else thought it was lame. Watching his performance at G1 gave me goosebumps and its so cool to see someone I consider a friend achieving the kind of success he has, and continues to achieve.
Its crazy how a kid from a place nicknamed “Trashcona” has gone on to become the biggest thing in wrestling.
The top comment on RyanTcone’s post (from Redditor stinkdink):
I live in Winnipeg and recently told some women that went to high school with him about his success in Japan. Response from one: “That loser that loved wrestling?!?”
Man, I wasn’t even there, and I’m getting heated. That loser that loved wrestling is a beloved figure. On top of that, the raw talent that he possesses is absolutely insane. If you haven’t watched a Kenny Omega match, you’re fucking up. Go do it immediately.
When you do, you’ll see it. Kenny Omega oozes athleticism and charisma. The only reason he’s not in the WWE is because that backwards ogre Bill Demott didn’t see his talent when they had him in Deep South Wrestling (NXT way before it was NXT). That’s what they get, though, for putting Hugh G. Rection in charge of training upcoming talent. Who made that call?
NOTE: Omega did say he had a good experience with Dave Taylor in Deep South, citing Taylor as the man who taught him the basics of wrestling. Before that, he got by on pure athleticism.
I was trying to get around dropping this, but I can’t. Kenny Omega won the G1 Climax this year. This is the same tournament won by legends such as Antonio Inoki, Andre The Giant, Masahiro Chono, Shinsuke Nakamura, Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kazuchika Okada, Hulk Hogan, and so on and so forth. He has joined an elite club. Good for him.
WWE has even offered Omega a bunch of contracts to make up for their screwup, and he’s turned them all down. He’s now shoved it in the face of his hometown and a billion dollar corporation. If that’s not a certified G move, I don’t know what is.
