It’s Star Wars Day! In celebration, I thought I’d keep it simple and focus on one aspect of the franchise: Ewan McGregor’s performances as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the prequel trilogy. He is the shining light in those three disasters.
I watched all seven films again recently. The prequels were insanely hard to get through. Not looking for an argument from anyone there. Just my opinion: those movies are dookie. Ewan McGregor never brings anything less than his A game, though. Every single line delivery is nuanced and natural. He makes George Lucas’ dialogue sound like Shakespeare.
Compare “I have the high ground” with, oh, I don’t know, “Anakin, you’re breaking my heart.”
While we’re on the subject, what happened there? Despite what a lot of people say, Hayden Christensen is a talented actor. I’ve seen him crush it in a couple films (check out “Life As a House” or “Shattered Glass”). And Natalie Portman is an Academy Award winner.
Why are both their performances so weak?
No. Sorry, that’s not what we’re here for. We’re here to celebrate Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan. No need to get negative.
In conclusion, thanks for being so awesome, Ewan McGregor, and May the 4th be with all of you!
