Welcome to the newest series here on Nerdopotamus. It is exactly what it sounds like: an excuse for anyone on the website to write about movies that we feel are underrated. We’re starting with the classic Disney animated movie entitled, “The Emperor’s New Groove,” starring David Spade, John Goodman, Patrick Warburton, Tom Jones, and Earth Kitt.
I was hanging out with my buddy Kevin a few days ago, and he started referencing this movie. Before long, thanks to Netflix, it was on my television. I forgot how funny the film is.
A large part of that is thanks to Patrick Warburton. That guy’s voice work is unparalleled. Some of the funniest stuff you’ll ever hear. He plays Kronk, Yzma’s (Eartha Kitt) side kick, a big, hilarious dummy.
I’m getting ahead of myself, however. Here is a full plot description, via Richard Hudson on IMDB.com:
“In this animated comedy from the folks at Disney, the vain and cocky Emperor Kuzco is a very busy man. Besides maintaining his “groove”, and firing his suspicious administrator, Yzma; he’s also planning to build a new waterpark just for himself for his birthday. However, this means destroying one of the villages in his kingdom. Meanwhile, Yzma is hatching a plan to get revenge and usurp the throne. But, in a botched assassination courtesy of Yzma’s right-hand man, Kronk, Kuzco is magically transformed into a llama. Now, Kuzco finds himself the property of Pacha, a lowly llama herder whose home is ground zero for the water park. Upon discovering the llama’s true self, Pacha offers to help resolve the Emperor’s problem and regain his throne, only if he promises to move his water park.”
It’s definitely David Spade’s best work. I know that really isn’t saying a whole lot, but he is genuinely hilarious in it. Everybody is. The whole film works, from start to finish. If you have the time, and a Netflix subscription, you should give this a watch.
You won’t regret it.
