Stone Cold Steve Austin vs Shawn Michaels
In early 1998, The Attitude Era was only at its beginning.
There were two men atop the WWE.
There was The Texas Rattlesnake, Stone Cold Steve Austin, and there was the leader of D-Generation X, Shawn Michaels.
The two were set on a collision course, when Stone Cold won the 1998 Royal Rumble.
For those who don’t know: when you win the Rumble, you get a shot at the Heavyweight Champion, and his title, at WrestleMania.
At that time, Shawn Michaels was the Champion (hence the collision course).
I remember being so torn.
I grew up a massive Michaels fan.
I loved the guy. I used to sing his theme song, all the time. I had a poster of him on my wall. I was all about The Heartbreak Kid.
The only problem was – I also loved Stone Cold.
What WWE fan didn’t?
Once he pulled that off, I was sold.
I wanted him out there, week after week, passing out Stone Cold Stunners like they were candy.
As I said, though – I grew up an HBK fan.
I loved DX.
I told everyone to suck it – and I mean everyone.
It got me in a lot of trouble, to be honest.
It even got The King of Smarks fired from his job at A&P.
I’m not kidding about that, by the way.
I couldn’t decide who I wanted to win.
Did I want Shawn Michaels, or did I want Steve Austin?
I finally made a decision, and I went with HBK.
I’m a man who appreciates loyalty.
Of course – given my luck – Shawn Michaels lost the match, and The Austin Era truly began.
